How a Certificate of Fitness works
One exam, and a card that lasts three years
Every one of the 36 is issued the same way. You study the course, apply to the FDNY, and sit a computer exam at their Brooklyn headquarters.

- How long the card lasts
- Three years for most certificates
- Renewal fee
- $15 for most three-year certificates
The FDNY emails a courtesy notice 90 days before a card expires. Renewing between 91 days and one year after that date costs a $25 penalty on top of the renewal fee, and a certificate more than a year past its expiration cannot be renewed at all: you sit the exam again.

You are at least 18
With a reasonable understanding of English.
Government-issued photo ID
Presented when you apply and when you take the exam.
A $25 FDNY application fee
Paid to the FDNY, on top of the course price.
Not sure which code you need?
