F-89 Fire and Life Safety Director
The F-89 is required to work as a Fire and Life Safety Director in New York City. You are the person at the fire command station during an incident, and the FDNY tests both the written knowledge and the way you run the job in your own building.

FDNY fees are separate and are paid to the FDNY: $25 for each of the two computer based exams, and $750 for the on-site exam.
Am I qualified
Who can take it
The FDNY does not ask for a high school diploma or a GED for this one. It asks for experience.
You are at least 18, with a reasonable understanding of English
Evidence of character and past employment satisfactory to the commissioner
Completion of an FDNY-approved 31-hour course, which is this course
Work experience: 3 years full-time, or 18 months full-time including at least 6 months continuous at one location
Firefighting or public safety emergency response, fire safety related work such as code enforcement, inspection, prevention or emergency preparedness, or the design, installation, operation or maintenance of building fire protection, electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation or air conditioning systems.
Holding a Q-01 or Q-99 and working as a building engineer counts, which makes the F-89 a natural next step for Q-01 students.
You cannot schedule your own on-site exam
Only personnel designated by the building owner can request it. You can finish the course and pass both computer exams and still not be able to complete the certificate without a building behind you. If that is your situation, talk to your employer before you buy, or ask them to buy the seat.
Exam day
There are three exams
01 · The course finals · Included
The 31 hours are in two components: a 20-hour Fire component and an 11-hour Non-Fire component covering the Emergency Action Plan and Active Shooter and Medical Emergency Preparedness. You pass a final exam at 70% for each. Two attempts each, and failing the second means retaking the whole course. Your school diploma is then valid for 9 months.
02 · FDNY computer exams · 9 Metrotech · $25 each
Two exams inside those 9 months: N-85 Fire, 120 questions, and Z-89 Non-Fire, 55 questions. 70% each. Failing either one twice means retaking the 20-hour course.
03 · On-site exam · $750
Held at the building, on the systems you actually work with. This is the one that produces the certificate.
If you fail
You get two attempts at the on-site exam. After a second failure you retake both computer exams, and you have to pass the Fire component within a year or start the 31-hour course again.
FDNY fees add up: $25 for each computer exam and $750 for the on-site exam, all paid to the FDNY rather than to Tauris Tech.
